This is the book to read to break through a spiritual lockdown. It has all the power and rigor of a post graduate course, but reads as easily as scooping ice cream. Nicole Murray’s voice is clear and sound. A new believer can rely on it, and a mature believer whose faith life may have been on auto pilot will feel like a new believer by the time they turn the last page. Every athlete can hit a wall they can’t seem to break through, and a Christian running their race to the end is no exception. It is all too easy to go stale, or by rote, be sidelined by moments of true spiritual dryness, or crushed by the dark night of the soul. God can become an abstraction. Nothing seems farther away or more silent than His voice. This book is a love story that unfolds a simple narrative of a deepening relationship and hourly conversation that is always on offer: “God is always speaking, but it may take awhile for you to recognize how He is speaking to you.” This is how the author describes what is waiting for everyone. Murray provides a progression of practices that help to begin, leads straight to the commitment in her convicting chapter on Stewardship, and points beyond to new directions in the closing chapter, “At the End of the Day.” There are helpful prayers, exercises and personal reflections in each chapter, and many scriptural readings with deft commentary and applications. At the end of the day in my home, this book goes back on the night stand for the beginning of the day!
